After years of a Dictatorship, millions of Filipinos united in
non-violent demonstrations that culminated on one of Manila’s
main arteries, Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), to usher
in a return to Democracy. This movement became known as
the “EDSA People Power’s Revolution” ending two decades of
the oppression. This has become universally defined as “People
Power - - political pressure exercised through a series of popular
demonstrations.”
While “power of the people” was showcased in the Philippines,
other non-violent and peaceful transitions of governance has
followed, including the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall, the Velvet
Revolution in Czechoslovakia and the bloodless revolution in
Bulgaria which led to downfall of the communist government in
both countries. Other People Power movements include the 2003
Rose Revolution in Georgia and the 2004 Orange Revolution in
Ukraine.
