Five Hundred Thirty American teachers journey to the Philippines aboard
the steamer “SS Thomas” to establish the first public school system.
An additional 540 arrive on subsequent ships and begin teaching english, grammar, geography and
mathematics while introducing American sports. Many died and were buried in the Manila North
Cemetery where a memorial was erected in their honor in 1917.
